Abstract

The quest for optimality and stability of the tungsten inert gas welding process has been a major concern to the welding researchers. The welding process involves the transformation of solid metals into liquid state in which it is exposed to harmful gases like hydrogen. It is proven that a sufficient amount of hydrogen if present in a weld microstructure can be harmful to the welded joint. Hydrogen gas gets dissolved in the structure of steel during the fabrication process which causes defects in the welded joint. The objectives of this research study targeted the ultimate tensile strength of the weld specimen. The genetic algorithm was applied using the Matlab software. The genetic algorithm model was developed to help maximize the strength of the weld and its adequacy validated. The results obtained showed that the model possessed low mean square error values and its predicted values is in reasonable agreement with the observed values.
